Growing up in Nova Scotia, Canada, Silas grew up going to church with his family and was heavily immersed as a child in genres such as Classical, Gospel, and East Coast folk music, especially Newfoundland folk music due to the majority of Silas' family hailing from the island. Silas' father Gregory Bonnell was a professional gospel singer, (classically trained in Tampa, Florida). Due to his fathers love of the genre having a large collection of gospel records in the house Silas' first exposure to music was rich in bluegrass instrumentation.

Silas started singing in a small Baptist church in Dartmouth, NS, where he attended with his family growing up. Silas branched from singing as a toddler he first picked up the ukulele first at age 4 learning to play simple chords, and old tunes such as “I want a girl” by Al Jolson. At age 5 Silas moved on from the ukulele to playing his dads acoustic guitar where friends and family would joke saying the guitar was bigger than him, and at the time it was! At 8 years old Silas saved up enough money to buy his first guitar, that was a small body Yamaha. By age 10, he had around 150 gospel songs under his belt by memory.

Writing songs didn’t become an interest to Silas until he was 15 when he started writing his first song for a girl he liked at the time. Music production followed soon after when his Dad bought him a Scarlett 2i2 pack to record his newly written songs. A few months later after writing a collection of songs, “Tonight” was released as the first single off his first demo album called “Pieces of my heart”. Following that came 3 more demo albums (Pretty as a sunset, Letters, and A girl). Bonnell’s first actual traction came from his second studio album Lady, where he had songs that gained popularity for songs such as “Pink if she loved me”, (that went 17th on CIOE Top 30) and “Lady” that became a crowd favourite in live shows.
